Tibetan rug making, an ancient craft, uses highland sheep's wool known as changpel. These Wangden rugs, handwoven in the Wangden valley in the region south of Shigatse, boast a looser weave, lower knot count, and a thick pile.
Originally crafted for monastic use, today they serve as versatile pieces—ideal as seating carpets, wall hangings, or even horse saddles. Today these rugs are woven only in the Wangden valley, though their manufacture may have been more widespread at one time.
