This SUM Paper Lamp is crafted by Berlin-based artist Setbyol Oh. Setbyol, missing the sun all winter, found that the lighting soothes these nostalgic feelings and began using Korean paper called hanji to create lamps. Hanji, made from the fibers of one-year-old mulberry trees. It has been a staple in Korean culture for centuries, adorning doors, windows, and traditional houses.
Each SUM lamp is meticulously handmade by Setbyol herself. She dedicates over five hours daily to crafting lanterns and lamps, a process demanding significant labor. Piece by piece, she adheres wrinkled papers onto the structure, ensuring harmony in shape and size. Her methodical approach, resembling a beautiful form of labor and also feels like a practice of meditation.
The SUM Paper Lamp is exclusively available through a collaboration with Setbyol Oh, sold only on Normal Normal's online store.
